Membership

The MAPTA membership year begins June 1, 2008, and ends May 31, 2009. MAPTA has several types of memberships.

  • Active Piano Teachers (ACT) is reserved for those professionals who are actively teaching in the Madison area.
  • Institutional membership (INS) is for organizations that provide a piano education department.
  • Associate Membership (ASM) is for piano technicians, music dealers without an education department, teachers not presently teaching, and teachers who live outside the Madison area.
  • Student Members (STM) are students of a university, college or high school, and Institutional Teachers (INT) are piano teachers employed by a music dealer or community music school who would like an individual membership in MAPTA.

Tony Caramia is Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music, where he is Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies and Coordinator of the Class Piano Program. He is a frequent adjudicator and in May 2003, he was a guest on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" on NPR.

Mr. Caramia has written numerous piano compositions as well as reviews for American Music Teacher and Piano Pedagogy Forum. He has conducted workshops in jazz piano for numerous conventions and conferences here and abroad. In 2006 he released his jazz solo piano CD tribute, featuring the music of Ellington, McPartland, Brubeck as well as original compositions.

HONORS FESTIVAL

Additional detail regarding the Honors Festival can be found in the MAPTA directory and via our newsletter, Nuances.

The Honors Festival is an annual event comprised of auditions and recitals exclusively for students of MAPTA teachers. This event is partially funded by a bequest from the estate of Mr. Hsen-Mu Huang.

Any pre-college piano student (through age 18) who currently studies with a MAPTA member is eligible and encouraged to enter. Students may play one or two pieces; the total playing time is not to exceed ten minutes. All music must be played from memory. Students auditioning for the Honors Festival should be capable of performing any intermediate or advanced piece of music composed for piano at least as difficult as those rated Level 5 and above in The Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature by Jane Magrath. Transcriptions and arrangements are not acceptable.

ADULT MUSIC SOCIALS

Adult Music Socials are informal gatherings for adult students and their teachers. Students are invited to perform and socialize.

PIANO PLAYTOGETHER (PPT)

The Piano PlayTogether is a group ensemble experience for members’ students. Groups of students perform various levels of repertoire directed by a conductor.

CREATIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL

MAPTA’s Creative Music Festival will not be held during the 2008-2009 year

YOUNG ARTIST RECITALS

Young Artist Recitals are opportunities for students of MAPTA teachers to share their pieces with others. Registration for these recitals is $5 per student, and must be received by the Young Artist Recital chairperson at least 2 weeks prior to the recital date.

These recitals are a good experience for students of all levels. Teachers are asked to keep their total recital registration within a 10 minute time limit. The recitals will be held on Sunday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. at the Steinway Piano Gallery, 6629 Mineral Point Road, Madison. If the total registration time of all students exceeds 45 minutes, two recitals will be held.

YOUNG COMPOSERS FESTIVAL

The Young Composers Festival is a contest of original piano solo and duet compositions by students ages 5-18, non-music major amateurs over age 18, and music teachers. This contest provides an opportunity for composers throughout our region to submit their compositions for judging. Winners are invited to perform at a recital.

A brochure containing festival rules, levels of entries accepted, fees, deadline, awards, and the application form is available from the chair. The brochure is included in the May Nuances for the following Summer, and is available online to members.

All winners will be invited to play at the festival recital to be held during MAPTA’s general meeting

Our September 2008 festival features UW graduate student Stacey Barelos, adjudicator. Her presentation “Decomposing Composition” will follow this year’s recital. The event will conclude with a potluck supper.
