The MAPTA Honors Festival recognizes the hard work of Madison’s most serious piano students, with closed auditions in front of a quest judge who will invite selected students to participate in a MAPTA Honors Recital at Morphy Hall the following week. We consider the judge’s comments to be a significant part of the value of this event and have stressed the importance of valuable, thoughtful comments for each and every student.
The festival is open to students of current MAPTA members who are in grades 4-12. Students will perform one or two memorized pieces, not to exceed eight minutes total. The judge will evaluate each piece independently and will recommend if the student is ready to perform on the Honors Recital (students may be invited to play only one or both pieces). Any student in grade 4 will be given comments only from the judge and will not be considered for the recital. Students who want to receive professional judging comments but cannot (or do not wish to) participate in the recital may audition for “comments only”, as indicated on the registration form.
Students must be playing at least level 6 repertoire. As a guideline, we will use Jane Magrath’s Pianist’s Guide to Standard Performance and Teaching Literature, but any repertoire series level 6 (Celebration Perspectives, Kjos Essential Repertoire, Norton Connections, Masterwork Classics, etc.) will be accepted. Furthermore, any Class A or B pieces from the WSMA Solo and Ensemble list are eligible, as well as Federation Medium Difficult and above. All repertoire music be memorized.
Fees for audition are $24 per student, whether playing one or two pieces.
Entry forms, which will be published in November-February Nuances, must be postmarked no later then Tuesday, January 9, 2018. These articles will also confirm final dates and adjudicator.
